San Francisco based artist Abner Nolan's Babble is informed by the wandering creative impulses of his 4 year old son. The installation combines videos documenting the intimate building of temporary structures overlaid by boarded up windows, a contemporary symbol of urban recession and blight.

Opening November 13th, Patrick Hillman: Sets & Reps

Patrick Hillman’s new installation Sets & Reps evolved from a series of conversations and interactions between the artist and a 70 year old bodybuilder named Guy. Discussions on male muscle culture, gay sex apps, and heartbreak translated into a diverse range of works including crocheted undergarments, a paper and Mylar sculpture, and a series of photographs.

Opening November 20th, Melissa Wyman: Backwards Beasts

Melissa Wyman’s Backwards Beasts is the marrying of two participatory projects that explore the awkward and symbiotic nature of interpersonal relationships. Collaborating with intimate partners, total strangers, and her 14 month old daughter, she utilizes wrestling and backwards gestures to seek out the transition (and oscillation) between forced and fluid moments: when ‘foreign’ or strange actions appear ‘natural’ and vice versa.

You roll away your stone, I’ll roll away mine is a series of week long solo exhibitions organized by artist Jason Hanasik. Noticing the generative nature of the intergenerational relationships in his own life, Hanasik tasked each invited artist to create a week long solo show with the stipulation that the artists collaborate with someone significantly older or significantly younger than they are. The result is a captivating series of projects which eloquently build on top of each other to collectively explore the themes of isolation, miscommunication, and expectations.

The installation draws on symbolic elements that, for the purposes of this collaboration, are called Figures. The Methods and Figures used in this experiment were decided upon using a strict protocol conceived of by the artists during an 11 year research cycle.

Right Window. People ask me, "What are we seeing" when they watch your new video installation presented at Right Window, "In a Station, Petals." It seems to pop right out of the box of windows onto Valencia Street, but it's a curious mix of abstraction and figuration.

Cecilia Dougherty. We’re seeing the fragments of television. In some scenes I found beauty and in others somewhat too overt expressions of emotion. For me they seemed to assemble and dissemble a narrative. I chose to focus on the beauty, letting the narrative go its own way, and therefore abstracted the images to a point between beautiful and awful.

Right Window. Where were you when you collected the materials for “In a Station, Petals,” and where were you when you molded them to their present form? It is a video that continually returns to the things of this earth, while suggesting an alternate reality shimmering right behind the one we know.

Cecilia Dougherty. I was in my bedroom, on my bed, while collecting most of the images. Possibly I collected all of the images from my bed. Then I went to my studio (front of the apartment—quite far from the bedroom) and did the most meticulous editing to get each image in good form and to put them in order and apply a few effects to each one (like putting on make-up). The piece wasn’t finished when I came to San Francisco, so I did the last of the editing at my friend Nancy’s apartment in Diamond Heights.

Re the continual returning to the things of the earth, this is a very nice thing to say. If that is true, then that part of it was done in San Francisco—it must have to do with the pacing, which is the last thing I worked on.

[Later.] I was thinking about your question about where I was when I got the images for my video and realized you must have meant where were the images when i got them. I said I was in bed! which is true, but maybe I should have said that I got them from watching tv shows online, playing with my cell phone’s camera (an old one, a relic) and holding it up to the screen while the image was paused so I could capture parts of the frame. the tv shows were: breaking bad, kings, combat hospital, royal pains, bones, fringe, a show about the friend of one of the royal pains stars getting a make-over, and a t-mobile commercial. There are others I forgot, but that covers most of the images.

The part about editing? in my studio? all true.

Right Window. You're an international artist and you live in NYC, but presenting your show in San Francisco has something of a homecoming feel to it.

Cecilia Dougherty. I feel at home in San Francisco, since this is where I learned to do everything—love, art, fucking up, thinking, reading, taking photographs, etc. This time around, I had no expectations of what the city could offer me and so had many excellent experiences while here.

Right Window. What are your upcoming projects, Cecilia?

Cecilia Dougherty. I'm working a 3-D video pretty much for the hell of it, and would like to do another longer story using a script and actors—I have a book in mind to interpret as a video, but haven't finished discussion with the author, so best to wait until I get started before talking about it. I also want to create a large-scale projection onto the Pirelli Tire Building in New Haven, CT. The landmark building was designed by Marcel Breuer in the late 1960s but sits, unused, in the middle of the Ikea parking lot. He also designed the Whitney Museum, btw.

FAREWELL, HELIOSPHERE!is an installation by Christine Canepa, and will be on view at Right Window through June 2011. It is a cover of General Idea’s installation Fin de Siecle, which was on view at SFMOMA in 1993. Like a musician covering another artist’s song, she has reinterpreted and rearranged General Idea’s piece, as both a humble homage, while adding her own layers of meaning. Replacing their 3 harp seals with a polar bear (another endangered animal), she is considering their ideas about extinction and endangerment. Endings have been a reoccurring theme in Canepa’s work. What happens to lives, events, relationships, or matter when they are no longer in the present temporal/spatial dimension is something she has explored in various bodies of work over the years. Sadly, polar bears will be gone in 50-100 years, according to author Richard Ellis. Beyond endangered, polar bears are facing imminent extinction. It is time to say goodbye.

General Idea are AA Bronson, Felix Partz, and Jorge Zontal. The latter two have since died from AIDS, while Bronson continues to work as an artist.

Matthew Gordon is “Posing as an Echo Tourist”

Right Window is pleased to present a new installation by San Francisco-based artist Matthew Gordon.

Through e-mail correspondence with the artist, I learned that the exhibition takes its name from a conversation where Gordon misheard/misunderstood what was being said to him. He wrote the phrase down in a notebook, along with other phrases gathered in a similar manner, and stored it away for later use. Eventually it reappeared in a poem, but also as a locus of thought around which Gordon created a new body of visual work.

When I asked him to expound upon this idea of re-purposed text and ideas, Gordon responded via e-mail with the following:

two plexiglass boxes-

part almost then, part almost window,

contain a prismatic relationship

where mystical smog transforms into an accidental newscasting technique-

i watch my hands,

loosing a high stakes performance space,

fill a field with guilt-

i am enchanted by a copy and its double.

posing as an echo tourist,

my little heart is broken

by a tactical break-up spell

as the light shimmers on my invisible authors.

Kelly Maxx graduated from SFAI in 1996. She has exhibited her work at LACE in Los Angeles, La Panaderia (curated by Miguel Calderon) in Mexico City, as well as the legendary Kiki in San Francisco. Most recently she contributed a guerrilla gardening action to the collective CIO SOTL in San Francisco.

Right Window is pleased to present a new installation by Louisiana-born, San Francisco-based artist Neil LeDoux.

The exhibition takes its name and its imagery from the finale of Season 5 of the now-defunct ABC TV series Lost, which memorably ended with Juliet (spoilers ahead) grabbing the detonator to a nuclear bomb and crying out, “Come on, you son of a bitch,” while blowing up the whole world to a white screen. The episode, titled, “Fade to White,” will be playing on the ATA screen during the exhibition’s opening.

In response, LeDoux attempts, like a magician, to make a piece of art that will go away completely. Specifically he is creating a large watercolor designed to fade to white in the sun of Valencia Street over the course of his month-long residency. Will the painting completely disappear? Will a ghost remain? Only time will tell.

LeDoux was inspired not only by Lost, but by a previous exhibition at Right Window (Christine Wertheim: “The Plastic Exploding Inevitable,” September 2008) in which Alicia Escott’s delicate painting on a plastic takeout container lost color and definition over a month of bright San Francisco weather. In addition, this work addresses the impermanence of Tibetan sand paintings, created during hours of intensive labor, then swept away in an instant, by Buddhist monks.

Neil LeDoux (b. 1976) is currently working on his MFA at the California College of the Arts. His work has been included in group exhibitions at the California College of the Arts and the Whitney Museum of American Art. In 2009, he had a solo exhibition, “The fountain of giant teardrops,” at San Francisco’s Silverman Gallery.

'Seeking to Destroy Families & Faith', a 2-Part Exhibition by Digital Artist Katie Bush

America’s Favorite Lady (Katie Bush) presents her summer long, soul-damning art exhibition ‘Seeking to Destroy Families & Faith’. In this two-part series, the artist erects a colossal pesticide-riddled harvest of family shattering digital content, so disagreeable in its homophobic vs. heterophobic nature, she was forced to separate it into two quarrelling geographic locations.

On one side of the city, (June - Sept 1, 2010 12- 6pm/most days), Mojuju Tatu is home to an arousing 190 sq. foot display of kaleidoscopic socio-sexual marital mayhem. Fourteen large format digital prints push these United States further and further down the depravity ladder; as pant-less wonderbeings projectile vomit beauty rays onto rainbow resistant churches and wrestle their way through plumes of morally delicate love squadrons trampling over dehydrated sunburned lesbian babies. Much to the merriment of many a learn’ed contemporary art lover, this massive aesthetic scourge is made all the more horrible by Miss Bush’s psychedelic pixel explosions of defective plutonium-tipped integrity missiles cocked firmly toward any and all promiscuous looking skin-colored lady parts. Is there any better way to celebrate summer?

The second installment of ‘Seeking to Destroy Families & Faith’ happens at night July 4th-30th, at ATA’s Right Window Gallery. Here, a glistening anti-family sculpture of non-air conditioned minivans bathe in a light so homosexually charged, it could split the very core of Hell wide open. With cyclopean focus, Miss Bush has created a sexually selfish environ that tests the backbone of our national heritage. Concerned citizens may begin preemptively pounding on their breastplates of judgment, to avoid being pelvically stimulated by this distasteful stockpile of unnatural love.

Heralded as a modern day digital sweetheart, Katie Bush is a Prop-8-hating visual terrorist (with a heart of gold). She received an MFA in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute and has been exhibiting her digital & analog art works globally since 1992. Her illustrations have been published in Dazed & Confused, The British Medical Journal, BoingBoing, Art XX (Aorta), Rhizome and her website Destroyevil.com continues to enchant morally upright citizens in over 194 countries and America.

Stephanie Mansolf's "Dear Catastrophe" will run from November 8-29, 2009.

Organized by Dodie Bellamy, "Dear Catastrophe" presents a series of Victorian styled treehouse dioramas - an imaginary cityscape - inhabited by humans, gremlins, and warrior cupids. Spike pits are layered in front of the treehouses, mountains behind the treehouses, clouds with battling cupids above the treehouses. In this layered landscape Mansolf explores how a space created for safety can quickly and easily become a threat. The treehouse city is inherently precarious, and its denizens are quickly falling into a chaos of disarray, danger, destruction, and death. Mansolf's startling dystopia draws on influences as disparate as the video game Mortal Kombat, the 1960's Disney film Swiss Family Robinson, and San Francisco's "painted ladies," the Victorian homes that adorn our streets.

Stephanie Mansolf received her BFA from UC Santa Barbara in 2006. During the end of her undergraduate studies Mansolf was commissioned in conjunction with artist Kat Trajano to transform Santa Barbara's chic Presidio Motel into an avant garde and eclectic art motel; a project from which the duo has received wide acclaim. Since then Mansolf has shown in Santa Barbara, San Francisco and Arcata California. Mansolf's practice delves into dark angles between reality and fantasy, investigating matters of human nature, disease, and hybridity through a manifestation of fanciful imagery. Employing gothic and surreal aesthetics, Mansolf creates a carnivalesque landscape where melodrama thrives, and taboo topics can be explored. She currently lives and works in San Francisco California.

Brenna Murphy with Kim Brauer in Psychometry III, 9/6

Psy·chom·e·try: (sī-ˈkä-mə-trē), Function: noun, Date: circa 1842. The divination of facts concerning an object or its owner through contact with or proximity to the object.

Right Window is proud to present Psychometry III, curated by D-L Alvarez. Parts one and two of this exhibition, which took place earlier in 2009 in Berlin, investigated a film based on a true story about a pilot who accidentally crashes a passenger plane. After the scattered pieces of the plane are gathered, its salvageable parts are re-used in other airplanes and the guilt-ridden ghost-pilot appears on those flights warning of potential dangers. Psychometry III at Right Window spotlights an artist who was herself something of a ghost in the first two segments, Brenna Murphy.

Based in Oregon, Murphy took part in the earlier Berlin installments of Psychometry, yet, within the physical space of the gallery her contributions were invisible. She sent an oblique instruction via a website (http://bucketfactory.com/ghostofflight401.htm) which another participant, Matthew Lutz-Kinoy, channeled into an assemblage of everyday objects that held true to Murphy’s coded vision. The collaboration, essentially a work by Murphy, was never physically touched by her or even seen by her until its completion—and then only through digital documentation after the fact.

With Right Window’s invitation to host Psychometry III, Murphy will finally materialize and work directly in the space. Her process is one of intuitive ordering, constructing complex patterned arrangements of banal materials. In using objects that are common, familiar, and don’t bare the marks of longtime use, she still succeeds in maintaining a degree of anonymity and challenges a notion of singular authorship. Her work (http://www.flickr.com/photos/brennaaa/sets/72157607099222958/) is grounded in a conviction that the key to accessing metaphysical realms can be found by concentrating closely on the mysterious materiality of coffee mugs and houseplants.

As she compiles lists of seemingly random choices and details of the everyday routines of flight passengers, Brauer vividly memorializes them.

Typically artist residencies are grounded in the notion that to create new work, artists need uninterrupted time and space. During that time artists are usually sequestered in a non-urban environment and are often expected to complete new work for exhibition. Given Right Window’s minimal resources and very publicly situated (and humble) space, the idea of 'residency' could be considered paradoxical and somewhat hyperbolic. Yet, for four weeks this summer, Right Window will explore how the framework of artist residency might work within a public rather than a privileged or private space as exhibition.

To this end, local artist Anne Colvin, whose art practice encompasses many media including photography and video as well as curating and publishing, has been invited to occupy Right Window as artist-in-residence. For her residency she will use two Maya Deren films—Meshes of the Afternoon and Ritual in Transfigured Time—as source material for a new video piece. A pioneering American avant-garde film maker working in the 1940s and 50s, Deren became known for her work with the power of movement and the challenges of space and time.

Like short form performances Colvin's video loops deliver a mesmerizing take on reworked footage. Whether a scene from Godard's Contempt or an isolated in-concert scream from Jim Morrison, abstracted clips coalesce with occasional sound along a tight timeline creating an experience more akin to musical abstraction than a linear filmed experience. Rather than focus on iconic or recognizable scenes Colvin is drawn to the interstitial—or inconsequential—moments and gestures which she extends in time. Shooting off the wall or directly from a monitor, she often creates her own movement within the camera assuming the role of 'choreographer.'

Visitors are encouraged to meet with Colvin during the time of her residency and witness her production process. Colvin will organize a series of events to coincide with her time at Right Window. The Analog Hole (or “Abundance”) is a new installation for RIGHT WINDOW Gallery by Chicago-based artist John Neff. The term “analog hole” refers to the difficulty of controlling rights to non-interactive digital media during playback. Coined by the Motion Picture Association of America, “analog hole” was quickly corrupted by the vernacular into “a-hole”. Neff’s recent digital-to-analog photographic process involves shooting digital images, creating hand-collaged acetate internegatives from those images, and printing his negatives as cyanotype photographs (or blueprints.) At RIGHT WINDOW gallery, the artist’s elaborate print-making process embodies the rich possibility offered by the analog hole.

Neff was one of three artists commissioned to create special projects for Photo Miami this year. His project, Father, can't you see I'm burning mixed images of nude male bathers with pieces based on his ongoing series depicting a nautical history of the United States. Exploring transparency and opacity, the bather images, large-format cyanotype prints, were presented on the specially constructed transparent exterior wall of his exhibition booth. The nautical subject – a monitor-bound digital image based on U.S. military photos of the 2000 bombing of the U.S.S. Cole and a collection of cyanotype reproductions of news clippings about that incident – were shown in the booth's dim interior, a space that was furnished to resemble a makeshift workspace. The project's title, Father, can't you see I'm burning?, was drawn from a Slavoj Zizek text that discusses the relationship between external violence and internal traumas in psychoanalysis, by way of a Freudian dream.

At RIGHT WINDOW Gallery, Neff will apply acetate negatives to the space’s front windows, transforming their panes into interpenetrated representations of an enlarged computer desktop and a small business storefront. Inside the gallery, prints made onto a variety of found fabrics will hang from lines stretched across the space. (Cyanotype prints are, in fact, developed in a water wash). Sorting, washing, folding, and hanging images out to dry, Neff will transform RIGHT WINDOW Gallery into a laundromat of sorts. As with his recent series, Bathers and Other Liquid Pictures (2007), Neff’s new project foregrounds watery studies of nude figures to suggest a return to the primacy of subjectivity in the visual arts.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: John Neff presented a commisioned artist project at the 2008 PhotoMiami art fair in Miami and premiered a new body of work, Basic or Boring Pictures, in a solo project at the 2009 Armory Show in New York with Western Exhibitions. His recent solo shows include Bathers and Other Liquid Pictures at Western Exhibitions in Chicago and Nocturnes for Boston at Proof Gallery in Boston. Neff’s 2006 solo show at Western Exhibitions was reviewed in several publications, including, TimeOut Chicago and Art Papers, where critic Anthony Elms called Neff “the most ambitious emerging artist regularly exhibiting in Chicago.”

Neff’s work has been discussed in Art in America, Artnet Magazine, Frieze, The Chicago Tribune, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. Neff’s work has been exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Location One (NYC), and Chicago Cultural Center, Donald Young Gallery, Gallery 400, all in Chicago. His work is in the collection of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. Neff received grants from Artadia and the Illinois Arts Council in 2002 and was a 2007 nominee for The Altoids® Award. His work Neff received a MFA from the University of Illinois-Chicago in 2001. Neff lives and works in Chicago.

RIGHT WINDOW Gallery: RIGHT WINDOW Gallery is a collaboration of twelve San Francisco artists and curators who pool resources to create street level venue for visual art. Because the exhibition space is small—it’s literally the right display window of a Valencia Street store front—the Gallery aims for creative uses of the space. Neff’s exhibition during May 2009 is curated by Cassie Riger. Riger’s last project for RIGHT WINDOW Gallery was Looking But Not Touching, a four-part performance series featuring over 30 artists, writers, and musicians, all free and available to pedestrians on Valencia Street in May 2008.

Coral reefs the world over are dying faster than rain forests. In homage to these vanishing wonders, Margaret and Christine Wertheim of the Institute For Figuring instigated a project to crochet a woolen reef, an effort that now engages women around the globe. This collective testimony also celebrates the strange hyperbolic geometry of the oceanic realm. As it has grown the reef has spawned, dividing and growing into multiple sub-reefs, each with its own unique ecology of corals, anemones, kelps and other sea life.

In September Right Window will be showing the Plastic Exploding Inevitable (PEI), a spawn of the Toxic Reef, aka Bikini Atoll, made from plastic bags and other refused and recycled materials. The most psychedelic of the Institute for Figuring reefs, the Plastic Exploding Inevitable features irradiant pink "sand," miniature white plastic spires, a grove of wine-glass trees, and a gorgeous reef panorama painted on a take-out box by Alicia Escott. In the decades since Warhol created his Exploding Plastic Inevitable, the multimedia component of the Silver Factory, the words he strung together have taken on a more sinister edge, and Wertheim’s installation helps us parse this new reality. In the North Pacific, for example, there is a gyre of floating plastic debris roughly the size of Texas.

When she is not crocheting reef items, Christine has a full-time job in the Department of Critical Studies at the California Institute of the Arts, where she teaches experimental writing and feminism. Christine's first book of poetry, +'Ime-S-pace, was published in 2007 by Les Figues Press, LA.

As described by the artist, "Mapping and Remapping our sublime quotidian: The Gypsies Tent" is intended to tackle the theme of consumption. " I do believe that the reflexivity stops one from being fully present in both understanding and appreciation of his/her surroundings. I also believe that at the core of our reflexive system is a matrix of mapping and remapping. Thus, in this body of work, I will be particularly interested in analyzing the system of architectural connections between the physical elements and horror vaccui dominant aesthetic. I began referencing the outside world hodgepodge through informational overlapping, until the point of self-annihilation and self-denial of the rendered elements when they start to loose their hierarchy. By using different cultural iconography, and by imposing and superimposing recognizable with more abstracted similes, I attempt to create a matrix of polyphonic images in my work. In doing so, I am more interested in offering the viewer the basis for personal stories, rather than didactical answers."

Essentially, "Turn to Stone" is an orchestrated, epic rock music installation courtesy of Matthew Hughes Boyko & Carol Anne McChrystal. With its psychedelic lyrical approach to installation and the enigmatic influence of Roger Dean & Electric Light Orchestra, the Right Window Gallery at ATA gains an entirely new perspective.

Texture is the key component to this installation. Even though the display is orchestrated, the synthetic arrangement of modernist sculpture, black light, fog and silver help the composition to move along the performative environments of the 1970s rock palette while keeping the contrived situation of window display art ambience at bay.

The Right Window Gallery at ATA is curated by Craig Goodman for the month of December, 2007. Carol Anne McChrystal and Matthew Hughes Boyko are both recent graduates of the California College of the Arts Master in Fine Arts program and are currently living and working in San Francisco, California. "Strangle Wrinkle" initiates the Right Window gallery with visual, audio and cultural abundance. Okichuu of Tokyo did live drawing in the gallery window, inspired by timeless American ballads spun by Right Window staff. Tokyo-based artist Motoko Ohta showed her video works "Girl_3" and "GuardDog" in the gallery.
