Steven Seidenberg – Lares and Penates

Steven Seidenberg
Lares and Penates: The Household Gods of East Berlin

September 1-30, 2013
Opening reception: Wednesday, September 11, 6-10 pm

Right Window is pleased to present Lares and Penates: The Household Gods of East Berlin by the San Francisco artist Steven Seidenberg. Right Window’s exhibitions are visible from the street; the gallery is open on Saturdays from 12-4 and by appointment.

Devised to allow the easy clearing of debris from roof and balcony drainage pipes, the cast-iron fittings imaged in this exhibition have largely disappeared—replaced by plastic and aluminum plates throughout the East Berlin neighborhoods where they were once prevalent. Each totemic grimace of these decaying visages intimates the history—and character of the Soviet era apartment blocks to which they are attached, both in growing state of disrepair and character of ornament unwittingly or illegally affixed. Some glare in eager anger at apathetic passersby, while others seem to hibernate in droll anticipation of an end that can’t come soon enough, but all declare a transit into utter dissolution otherwise unheralded by the denizens they’ve spent the last half century surveying. I seek in turn to witness and portend as witness the stages on the path towards the event horizon of complete elision, a performative decadence that transforms the commonplace of objects in abeyance into testament and sculptural abstraction.

In Roman religious practice, Lares and Penates were the deities of the household and domestic life. Lares were ancestral spirits to which everyday prayers and offerings were made, kept in the family shrine. Every family had its own Lar familiaris, beseeched to ensure familial health and longevity. Penates were the spirits of the pantry, taken out during meal times to preserve the family wealth and keep its members fed.

Phillip Maisel - Stack

Phillip Maisel
Stack

July 7 through 29, 2013
Opening reception: Sunday, July 7, 2013, 2-5 p.m.

Right Window is pleased to present Stack, by the Chicago-born, San Francisco-based Phillip Maisel, a group of recent photographs and site-specific sculpture that straddle the imaginary distance between 3-D and 2-D.

Phillip Maisel's photographs of the materials, walls and floors of his work space muddies the distinction between architectural image and the ways in which out of habit we perceive and label photographic space. In Maisel’s work, the distance drops out between viewer and judge, for he shows us not only tantalizing glimpses of work largely unseen and stacked against the wall, but what we learn is that the glimpse is all you’re ever going to get. The emotional lessons of his photos question both the use value and two-dimensionality of the medium, while confronting us with a physical presence influenced by sculpture.

Maisel revels in the “stack,” an agricultural figure that manages to capture opposing elements of primitive social action, that of the hunter, that of the gatherer. Were these inventions of history gendered from the start? Maisel absolves such cruel taxonomy with a light touch well suited to the gentle summer of San Francisco where you can see his work all month long in the storefront window of the city’s #1 gallery.

Katie Bush - Rapture of the First Fruits

Rapture of the First Fruits
(A Panorainbow Lady Output Dedicated to all Aorally-upright Babies of a New Tomorrow)
Large Format Art Exhibition

by Katie Bush

June 1 - July 1, 2014

America’s Favorite Lady (Katie Bush) introduces an illuminated panorainbow lady output dedicated to the morally-upright babies of a new tomorrow. With cyclopean focus, the artist has created a sexually selfish night-based environ sure to push these United States further and further down its invisible depravity ladder. Behold as pant-less wonderbeings projectile vomit beauty rays onto the rainbow-resistant loveless, wrestling their way through plumes of genitally delicate love squadrons trampling over dehydrated sunburned lesbian babies. Much to the merriment of many a learn’ed contemporary art lover, this massive aesthetic scourge is made all the more horrible by Miss Bush’s psychedelic use of pixel configurations bursting with defective plutonium-tipped integrity missiles firmly cocked toward any and all promiscuous looking skin-colored lady parts. Is there any better way to celebrate a homosexual and/or heterosexual summer?

Heralded as a modern day digital sweetheart, Katie Bush is a Prop-8-hating visual terrorist (with a heart of gold). She received an MFA in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute and has been exhibiting her digital & analog art works internationally since 1992. Her film ‘Seeking to Destroy Families and Faith’ was featured at the San Francisco International Animation Festival and her illustrations have been published in Dazed & Confused, The British Medical Journal, BoingBoing, Art XX (Aorta), Rhizome. Her 2004 website Destroyevil.com continues to enchant morally-upright citizens in over 194 countries and America.

Exhibition on view now through July 1, 2013
